If the image has a soft transition into the transparent areas, you should not remove the alpha channel, since the information used for the transition is not be saved in the file. To export an image with transparent areas that do not have a soft transition, (similar to GIF), remove the alpha channel.
System-wide script-fu scripts are stored in /Applications/GIMP.app/Contents/Resources/share/gimp/2.0/scripts/. Executable and python plugins are located in /Applications/GIMP.app/Contents/Resources/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/
gimp plugin save for web mac
GIMP plugins can be quite varied, with a few classics having disappeared over the years. Happily, these have been replaced by some truly impressive pieces of software that are ensuring that GIMP remains a viable alternative to Photoshop, Lightroom and Luminar AI when it comes to image processing.
While they both also function as standalone software, both DarkTable and RawTherapee (see below) work relatively seamlessly as GIMP plugins, allowing you to process raw files and make non-destructive changes to images.
One of the more literal titles for a plugin, Duplicate To Another Image massively simplifies the workflow in GIMP, making it very useful while also packing in a few other handy features to make your life even easier.
Different GIMP plugins are accessed and run in different ways. Some may show up under the Filters menu; others can be accessed by options in the Layers menu or Image menu, and others appear under a menu called Script-Fu.
Some plugins come as software packages that install automatically. Others require you to install them manually by moving unzipped files to a specific location. For the precise steps, see the instructions above.
I wish to compile the Gimp plugin "Save for Web" on Mac 10.8.4. I use brew for package management but libgimp2-dev is missing. I've downloaded Gimp 2.8.6 from here . I've downloaded the latest source cd into that directory, but when I run ./configure I get the error of package requirements not being met (gimp-2.0gimpui-2.0 needs to be greater than 2.3 / gimp-2.0gimpui-2.0 not found)
The GIMP save for web plugin is a handy tool that can help you optimize JPEG, GIF and PNG images. It's easy to use as it offers an image preview and has settings to remove EXIF info along with reducing quality, cropping and resizing images.
If you don't know where your Gimp plugin's directory is, go to 'Edit > Preferences > Folders > Plugins'. You should be able to see one or more locations here. Go to these locations and if you can find existing plugins there. If yes, that's the folder you want to paste your webexport.exe in.
I tried reducing an unoptimized JPEG image which was at 57.75 Kb to 15Kb which is more than a 70% reduction from the original size. The optimization was done using Gimp, Gimp save for web plugin and RIOT. Settings used were as follows:
As you can see, RIOT has done a great job of reducing the image size while maintaining the overall image quality. The save for web Gimp plugin is not too bad as well. The Gimp output is a little blurry but definitely acceptable.
This simple script takes a filename and some numeric parameters. It opens the respective file, applies the Unsharp Mask filter and saves the image again (be careful, for the sake of simplicity this script overwrites the original image). It does all this w/o any user interaction, so we can run it without any user interface. In order to do that, save the script with the .scm extension in the /.gimp-2.4/scripts directory. Then run it like this:
There is a catch here: Some plugins or Script-Fu scripts create new layers and then flatten the image again. This changes the drawable ID. If this is the case insert the following line to get the current drawable ID just before saving the image:
We are offering all our brushes, plugins, scripts and patterns for Photoshop and GIMP here on our web page. Everybody can inform about all PS/GIMP brushes, scripts and plugins and can download them.
Images with larger size often take much longer time to open up. And, if we cut the image size, quality of the image reduces. Thus, it becomes a bane to cut down the image size without compromising on the overall quality. This is where the GIMP Save for Web plugin really outperforms. It is the best and the simplest way for the image size reduction.
When you are done tailoring your image, it is the time to save the changes made. The smartest way to do this is Save For Web plugin. Just go to file menu and then choose Save for Web. Here, you will find four different image formats namely JPEG, PNG-8, PNG-24, GIF. You can select the desired format you want your images to be saved with.
These are the options and set of features we get with the GIMP Save for Web plugin. You can save your image into any of these file formats choosing the right set of features and dimensions according to your requirements.
GIMP plugins transform our favorite free image editor from a good program into a near-Photoshop equivalent. Plugins add new features, improve your workflow, and help you customize GIMP to your exact preference.
Like all great things in life, however, installing GIMP plugins can be complicated. They can be hard to find, tricky to install, and you may run into compatibility issues. In this guide, we'll walk you through how to use GIMP plugins and which ones are worth your time.
Some GIMP extensions are very old and haven't been updated in a decade or more. There's no guarantee that the GIMP scripts that you find will play nicely with the version of GIMP that you use. Plugins that were popular in the past, like the GIMP DDS plugin or BIMP, are now abandoned and no longer work.
If your GIMP plugin is in a ZIP file, you'll need to copy the contents to GIMP's Plugins and Scripts folders. Make sure that the downloaded plugin has been unzipped before continuing.
Installers are platform-specific, so you might find plugins that are only available for Windows, but not Linux or Mac. It's also worth remembering that opening random installers off of the internet can be risky, so make sure that your antivirus software is up-to-date and running properly.
Once you've installed your GIMP plugin, you should see it appear under the Filters menu or another one of the submenus nearby. It may be under Image or Layers, or you may get a whole new menu called Script-Fu. Sometimes, GIMP plugins may run as a separate app, triggered to launch whenever they're needed.
Resynthesizer is one of GIMP's oldest and most essential plugins. It provides a series of tools designed specifically to work with textures. You'll find the most important part under the Enhance menu: Heal Selection.
This GIMP Heal Selection plugin is the equivalent to Photoshop's Content-Aware Fill tool, one of the things Photoshop can do that GIMP can't. It enables you to seamlessly remove unwanted objects from a photo.
Heal Selection magically replaces the blemish or intrusion with surrounding content from the background of your image, blending everything together perfectly. If, for example, you remove something from the sky, the space will be automatically filled with more sky, just like in Photoshop. For this reason, this GIMP Photoshop plugin is one that we cannot live without.
The plugin uses an advanced form of frequency separation. It splits the image into multiple layers, each containing different sets of details. This gives you minute control over which details you want to smooth and which to keep.
Can't GIMP already do this? Yes, but not very well. The Duplicate to Another Image plugin lets you copy a selection onto a new image scaled to the same size as your original, keeping the object in the same place.

This post is awesome and really add value to my site. However, I recently tried to save images from flipkart but it saved in very low pixel format. Wondering if you can help me to figure out on how to do that.
Adding additional functionally or automation to any application can be extremely useful. Take, for example, the DDS plugin. The DDS plugin is a now stable and reliable plugin to load DDS files, supporting the OpenGL S3TC extension. Of course, GIMP plugins are not limited to file loading. There exists a GIMP plugin for using the CMYK color model!
On Windows, go to the folder GIMP is installed in (usually somewhere in Program Files). Once in the GIMP main folder navigate to lib\gimp\*version*\ where as *version* represents the version of Gimp. Then double click the "plug-ins" folder. Not all plugins will run in Windows if the OS is 64bit.
Locally installing plugins are easiest because they will usually be stored in a hidden folder under $HOME/.gimp-*.* (where you should replace $HOME with path to your home catalogue and gimp-*.* with the version you use (for example 2.6). In this case, however, the plugins you install will only be available to the user who installed them, which may not be what you want. 2ff7e9595c
