Category:American expatriates in FranceWASHINGTON — A bipartisan group of lawmakers on Monday announced the introduction of legislation to enhance the security of America’s nuclear weapons.
Reps. Bob Latta (R-Ohio), who is a former chairman of the House Armed Services Strategic Forces Subcommittee, and Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), who is a former chairwoman of the House Armed Services Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee, led the effort to write the Nuke Security for Tomorrow Act.
“Nuclear weapons are among the most destabilizing forces in the world,” Lofgren told reporters Monday. “We have not seen a threat that is greater than today’s threat posed by nuclear weapons.”
The act’s sponsors are more concerned that the danger of a nuclear attack remains unacceptable to the public than about whether the United States has the means to defend against one.
“The greatest risk to the American people right now is the risk of nuclear proliferation, and it’s largely self-inflicted,” Lofgren said.
The act would authorize up to $50 billion over 10 years for modernizing nuclear weapons and facilities, for developing non-nuclear defenses, and for retiring weapons no longer needed by the nation.
The bill’s supporters also argue that the United States must have the ability to respond to a nuclear attack.
